City information
Capital of Spain and very largest city in New-Castille. Its name would come from the Arab word Magerit, itself from the word "materia" meaning wood, a reference to the forests which pushed in the area when Mores built a fortress in the IX century there. Madrid was conquered by Mores in 1083 and became the capital of Spain in the place of Valladolid under the reign of Philippe II, in 1561. Far from all, it became the largest city in the country only in the XIX century with the appearance of the railroad. The city undergoes many bombardments during the civil war (1936-1939). Today, it is the second industrial center of Spain after Barcelona; aeronautical construction, electric and agricultural hardware, leather. The royal family resides in it. Of all its museums, the most remarkable is Prado. Madrid is a capital of more than 3 million inhabitants. The city is consisted various districts, well and defined differences between them and others having simply a particular characteristic: there are Madrid de Goya, that of Prado, romantic Madrid, that of Isabelle II: that of the novels of Perez Galdos, there is picturesque Madrid of the rastro, the bullfighters, the dancers of flamenco, Bailaores, the antique dealers, the artists.Madrid has a great number of museums where are presented the greatest Masters of Spanish and universal painting. The museum of Prado is most known but there are also the museums of art of the Queen Sofia, royal arms manufacture and the museum of Carosses and many others...
You will also like the gastronomy of Madrid with its famous Cocido, composed of chickpeas, of chorizo, meat, potatoes (sausage or pepper) of rolled, chicken and seasoning. The tripe of Madrid is a culinary specialty of the capital. One prepares them with white wine, cognac, red pepper, ham and spices.
