Town information
T he province of Alicante has 212
kilometers of coast, from Punta de la
Almendraba in the north to El Mojón in the south. It is the southernmost
of the three provinces of Valencia, with its landscapes
of palm trees, orchards, vines, pine forests, and spoiled by the Mediterranean
climate. The Ibères, whom lived from pasturage (which consists
of feeding the herds), fishing and agriculture founded Alicante.Other people, Phoenicians, Greeks,
Carthagians,
Romans, Gaelic, Germans as well as the Moslems
contributed to the history of Alicante until the
Reconquest which started in the XII century with the
agreements of the kingdoms of Castille and Aragon.
This Reconquest was to end only in XVII century,
following the serious economic crisis which resulted
from the expulsion of the Mores, in 1609, under the
reign of Philippe.
It is to this monarch that was offered, at the time of
a voyage to Dénia, one of the most typical and
known festivals of all the province: "Moros y Christianos
(Mores and Christians) ", still organized in spring and
in summer in general happiness.
Becoming capital during first half of XIX century, Alicante is instituted like one of the centers of the greatest commercial growth, being one of the most active seaports of the Mediterranean from the
exchanges between Europe and the Americas
Alicante the cityThe white fortress, as known to the Carthagnians, Greeks and Romans, is a city which borders of broad
avenues and gardens, its old neighborhood El Barrio
between the castle of Santa Barbara on the Benacantil
mount, Rambla de Méndez Núñez and the Esplanade,
with its beautiful view at the seaside.
During the first quarter of XX century, the town planning of Alicante increases between the neo-classical and
rationalism. The range of Postiguet gives access to the castle of Santa Barbara, the oldest monument of the city, with the most beautiful sight on
Alicante. Built on old
mosques, the current church of Santa Maria, baroque style, the cathedral of San Nicolas, Herrera style of XVII century, and the Town hall, baroque also, are considered artistic historic buildings. But it is in the sea where Alicante draws its
beauty: in the south, the island of Tabarca and its old working of XVIII century, abundant archaeological layers, single sea-beds and a good communication with the port of the capital; in the north, the beaches
of Albufereta and San Juan, once passed Huertas, which inherits in the summer as centers for meeting,
bars, discotheques etc.; and in the winter in a estudiantine environment, the range of Postiguet and the old working El Barrio. And it is still very close to the sea, while walking from Esplanade, the music lover will be able to listen to concerts Sunday,
mornings in winter and the afternoons in summer. Music, explosions of powder, imagination in clothing and costume, here are some of the ingredients of the festivals of
Alicante: the liquors
will be plentiful! The festival of Moros y Christianos,
organized in almost all the province, has a particular
importance to Alcoy; with El Misteri d' Elche, declared international tourist interest.
The first takes place from the 22 to April 24. Unceasingly, as of the prayers of the paddle until
the appearance of St George, Mores and Christians
ravel or dispute in the streets of the city: battles
and altercades on both sides. Invitations to taste herberos, bleached on grass brandies,
and coffees liquors. From the 11 to August 15
takes place in Elche El Misteri, a medieval representation (XIII century). The first three days in huis in the basilica of Santa María, and the two
last, publicly. Notice especially the fireworks of the
" Nit of Alba " or " Alborada ", who present a certain
danger uninitiated or the imprudent ones; the final
sheaf is immense " a palm tree " dedicated to the
virgin. Fires of San Juan in Alicante, the Holy Week
of Orihuela and Crevillente, " boil has the mar " with Denia, among others many celebrations, thus like the International Contest of Habaneras and Poliphonie de
Torrevieja, is the examples of the large variety of festivals of this
land.
Alicante is a large exporter of
wine, citrus fruits, almond and olive oil.
