City information
http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/
http://www.sydney.com.au/
The
first port and the most ancient and biggest city (1735 km2) of the
country, the capital of the New South Wales, on the coast. Sydney
developed around the magnificent site of Port Jackson, chosen in 1788 as
the installation of 1487 colonists, among which 759 convicts come from
England. Historic buildings; the St-James church and Hyde Park barracks
(in the beginning of the XIX century) and of remarkable modern
constructions; Tour Centres point (305 m height) and its gyrating
restaurant, the opera and its very popular and particular roof inaugurated
in 1973 and the Harbour Bridge ( 1932 ) of 504 m length, which connects
the North and the South of the city.
Dynamic city with its
very active port and its 3 universities, Sydney also receives thousands
of tourists attracted by its famous beaches, as that of Bondi. But
Sydney is a city at the edge of the ocean, in the mouth of a river, at
feet of a chain of hills, with a centre reserved for the business,
shopping and spectacles, a vast crown of suburbs. Let us add some
magnificent monuments, the Iron bridge and the Opera, the colonial
districts. Sydney likes swimming and drinking, dancing and eating,
promenading and playing. Vast beaches give rhythm of the city-dwellers
week end, to the subtropical climate offering days of radiant light
which are true happiness. 65 kilometres West of Sydney throne the old
Blue Mountains of 170 million years, modeled by the volcanic activity,
dug by deep canyons. Seen far away, these mountains have generally a
bluish tint, a phenomenon provoked by the mist of the vapours which
escapes from eucalyptus forests when they absorb the infrared rays of
the sun.
